Problem Solved: Bird Netting
Awnings are an effective and convenient way to provide protection from the elements – sun, rain and snow. This protection appeals not just to us humans, but also to birds and other critters looking for a dry, comfortable place to rest or nest.
The primary solution to keep birds away is to create a bird barrier underneath the awning. This is accomplished with either plastic egg crating or a mesh bird netting. While both methods work, they can also be unsightly. Egg crating tends to discolor, collect dirt, and even break over time. Because it is a hard plastic, it can also be more difficult to customize. Bird netting can be cut to fit precisely over the desired area, but it has a tendency to sag or droop.
Acme Awning has devised a new bird netting solution that delivers a good looking and sag-resistant barrier. It starts with a 10-mil polyethylene 3/4″ square black bird netting that can keep small animals and birds out. We pull the netting tight, then rim it with dimensionally stable black Patio 500. We attach this to the frame using grommet and track. This method allows for customized installation and, due to the way it is manufactured, a consistently tight finish that will last over time.
