Modernizing an Old Awning in Minneapolis
By nature, awnings are an environmentally friendly solution (see here and here). Awning covers typically last for many years and we see frames here in the Twin Cities that have been around for decades and decades. So what happens when a business wants a more modern look for their storefront, but prefers to save money and resources, so they don’t want to start from scratch? They contact Acme Awning! We specialize in custom awning recovers in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding metro area.
Our project this month is LeoDaniels Jewelry Store on Minnetonka Blvd in St. Louis Park, just outside of Minneapolis. The storefront has a prominent backlit canopy — over 5 ft tall and 30 ft wide. The frame is complex and at least 30 years old, and the existing look was dated and out of style. Most backlit canopies use a particular type of vinyl that allows the light to shine through, but they have a plastic-like finish. For an upscale jeweler like LeoDaniels, a softer more contemporary look was needed.
Acme Awning was hired to evaluate the situation and find a solution that would both reuse the existing structure AND create a finished look that would compliment LeoDaniel’s brand. We found the metal frame to be in sound condition and knew that we could recover it in a way that would modernize the awning. The majority of our awning covers are made with Sunbrella Awning/Marine Canvas, a high-quality brand known for its durability, and there are a few lighter colors that work in backlit situations. For this customer we went with a white canvas with black lettering. This combination is contemporary, easy to see from the street, and consistent with the store’s brand. Do you have an old or outdated awning and want to freshen up your facade? Not sure if your frame can be reused? Contact Acme Awning today.
